Dr John Briffa’s latest book, The True You Diet, slaughters not one, but a whole herd of nutritional sacred cows, as it reveals that the truth about healthy eating is to be found, not in the latest diet or ‘superfood’, but in our evolutionary past. "Diets fail because they take a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach and it’s time we understood the importance of discovering and eating in accordance with our individual nutritional needs,” explains Dr Briffa. “Only through understanding the diet that sustained us during most of our evolution can we hope to understand what it truly means to eat a healthy diet, and that one person’s meat can be another’s poison.” According to Dr Briffa, differences in environment and food availability made our ancestors adopt different diets. There were those who had a diet rich in animal foods - who are referred to in the book as ‘hunters’, those who ate predominantly plant foods - the ‘gatherers’, and those who became adapted to something in-between - the ‘hunter-gatherers’. The True You Diet uses scientific evidence to show that these ‘types’ exist today, and why this is so important in determining an individual ‘ideal diet’.
